What is it like to Pitch at Ultra Light Startups?
Pitching at Ultra Light Startups is fun, easy and a great way to anounce your busines to fellow entrepreneurs. When you pitch, you stand at a microphone at the front of the room with your website is projected on to the screen behind you. You talk about your business for 60 seconds - describing the market, the problem you solve, and your revenue model. Then you take 1 or 2 questions and return to your seat. Everyone in the audience is very helpful and supportive.
This video of pitches at Ultra Light Startups from May 2010 will give you an idea what to expect.
Requirements to Pitch
- You must be a Founder and Principal of a for-profit company (Founder/CEO, Founder/CxO, Founder/President, or Founder/Partner)
- Your company must have a website (a single splash page is fine, but not a "domain registered" holding page). You must pitch that site (don't register with one site and pitch some other site or idea)
- You must pitch your company, the company associated with the website you provided, in a 60-second "elevator pitch" (see guidelines below). Your website will be projected on the screen behind you while you speak.
- You much register in advance to pitch and there are limited Pitch tickets (~20). Pitch tickets typically sell out at least a week in advance. If you would like to pitch be sure to register early.
Why We Pitch
Your 60-second elevator pitch does not necessarily require extensive preparation and should not be intimidating. Some pitches are polished and rehearsed, others are not. The purpose of pitching is threefold:
- To screen the event for entrepreneurs (ie founders).
- To facilitate networking.
- To refine an essential skill.
Guidelines for Pitching
- Pitch your company (not your personal life story or career history)
- Each pitch is 60 seconds; up to 2 audience follow-up questions
Pitch should state
- Your name and company’s name and your title at your company
- Product/service description and target audience/customer
- Revenue model – how do you make money
- Management team and strategic relationships
- Status, funding, and financial overview
You can also add
- Stats about your company (e.g. monthly hit-count, cost to develop, investors, company headcount, outsourcing used, etc.)
- What you need the groups help with (e.g. spec writing, project management, legal issues, marketing, etc)
- If you are a service provider you should give a valuable tip regarding your service to the startups in the audience.
