About

Ultra Light Startups is an online and in-person community of technology entrepreneurs who share advice, contacts, and best practices for minimizing the cost of launching and maximizing the probability of success.

Of particular interest to the group are topics such as:

  • Innovative Monetization Techniques – advertising, affiliates, subscriptions, memberships, marketplaces, lead-gen, etc).
  • Social Media Marketing – social networks, Twitter, online video, etc.
  • Off-The-Shelf and Open Source Platforms content management systems and development environments.
  • Virtual Companies – distributed teams, freelancing, offices-of-convenience and outsourcing.
  • Cloud Computing – low-overhead, flexible, on-demand infrastructure.
  • Social and Mobile as marketing, delivery and monetization platforms.

What kind of events do we host?

  • The Entrepreneurs Forum. Monthly, with 80-100 attendees, 20-30 of whom give short (60-second) pitches. This is followed by pizza/networking and a headline panel in which successful bootstrapped entrepreneurs talk about a topic of interest to founders of ultra light startups.
  • The Legal Roundtable. Monthly, with 30-50 attendees. A panel of “ultra light friendly” lawyers answer questions on legal topics of interest to tech entrepreneurs, including Corporate Formation, Financing, Intellectual Property, and Immigration/International Topics.

What makes us different?

  • Bootstrapping Focus – Profitability first and investment later (or ideally not at all)
  • Participatory Style – Event formats and pitching style promotes openness, community, and effective networking.
